Leather: Where does it come from?

Mad Dog

The agricultural industry provides many commodities for consumers including meat, dairy, and fiber products. In addition to these goods, the cattle industry supplies leather for products like car seats, footwear, handbags, and custom leather products such as Mad Dog chaps! Leather is a byproduct from the beef and dairy industry and is considered to attribute to 5% of the animal's carcass value. Typically cowhide is utilized for leather products however, some other leathers used include ostrich, buffalo, and alligator.

Leather is a fantastic, natural resource compared to synthetic leathers created by non-renewable resources such as Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) and Polyurethane (PU). Although genuine leather is treated with chemicals during the tanning process, the chemicals used to produce synthetic leather completely surpasses the amount needed for tanning leather (Anicca Solutions). Not to mention the qualities of real-leather like durability, strength, and flexibility which synthetic leathers do no possess.

Individuals purchasing bonafide leather goods can be assured the product is eco-friendly, stylish, and has the ability to endure difficult tasks on the ranch, in the arena, and every-day life.
